Archives For pga tour

Recently, I watched some old footage of professional golf from the 60′s and 70′s. It got me thinking about the art of playing golf and if it’s been lost on tour.

Pros today can go after every pin and take huge risks without much consequence. Sure, they might miss a cut or lose a tournament down the stretch but risk doesn’t usually outweigh reward. It pays to pin seek.

All they have to do is set fire to water once or twice a year and take home serious loot.

I’m not convinced this is bad, we get to see great heroics and tragedies but the artistry to playing shots seems to be going the way of the buffalo.

What do you think? Is there still an art to playing on tour?

I’m not betting on any players in this week’s U.S. Open, but if I was these would be my favorite picks. As a proud American player, I have faith that our guys can regain the top spots in the golf world. One of those being the U.S. Open Champion. If an international player were to win this week it would be five consecutive majors without an American winner. That hasn’t happened ever in the modern grand slam era (Masters, U.S. Open, British, & PGA). As a rule in betting, always go with history… or something like that, so I would bet it wouldn’t happen this time either.

A safe bet is always Phil Mickelson. He is usually in the mix at the U.S. Open, but hasn’t ever closed the deal. I don’t think it matters that he’s not playing his best golf right now, Phil is a competitor and he really wants that U.S. Open title.

Two solid bets and big hitters are Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. Both have multiple PGA Tour victories and are just waiting to bust through that major championship barrier. Congressional is long and demanding off the tee, watch out for these two guys if they can keep it in play and make a few putts. Also, Dustin Johnson now has a veteran caddy in Joe LaCava can only help in such a pressure filled tournament.

My favorite pick is Jonathan Byrd. I’m a little biased and always pull for J Byrd, but I truly believe he has a great shot this week. For one, Jonathan loves to work the ball right to left, which is crucial at Congressional. Second, with five PGA Tour victories and several other close calls in big events, he is also very ready to win a the big one. He also has been working on a renewed attitude on the course. Always known as a Hogan-like grinder and perfectionist, J Byrd has created an alter ego “Johnny Byrd” to help free himself up in competition and be a little more accepting of mistakes. Everyone will make mistakes at the U.S. Open, whoever handles it and well makes the least amount will probably win. I really like “Johnny Byrd” this week at the U.S. Open.

As always it will be fun to watch. I’ll have more for you guys as the week rolls on. Enjoy U.S.  Open week!

eGolf: The Third Tour

eGolf

If you’d like to see who’s next on the PGA Tour, check out the eGolf Professional Tour.

There isn’t a better mini tour in the nation that I’ve seen. When I was playing, we called them mini-tours but in reality it was an organized gangsome. We would put up an entry fee, the host course would take their cut, and to the winner go the spoils. You could would finish in the top ten and lose money.

The eGolf Tour has sponsors, PGA Tour like tournament conditions, and real purses.

Last year 12 eGolf Tour players earned PGA cards and its alumni includes Johnson Wagner, Steve Marino, Jamie Lovemark, Tommy Gainey, and David Mathis.

If the tour makes a stop near your town, go out and support the future crop professionals. You may even see View from the Fringe contributor, Kevin O’Connell! He tends to leave the dessert to stroll the eastern fairways from time to time.

Are there any other mini tours left to compete?

Today’s post is by Kevin O’Connell. Welcome him to the View from the Fringe team. Kevin will be writing about life, all the highs and lows, as a touring pro. He is a professional golfer out of Scottsdale and Dallas/FW. Kevin plays on the Tarheel and Gateway Tours. He is a former NCAA champion and one of the more entrepreneurial golfers I know.

The 2010 PGA Tour was an erratic one. Tiger, the rules debacles, Sunday meltdowns, and even the Ryder Cup outcome left us scratching our heads. But we made it through and I feel like 2011 will be very exciting.

2011 PGA Tour Predictions

  • Tiger- No doubt he will be back  but his overall dominance is all but gone.
  • Young Guns- Watch out for the new crop of PGA Tour players on the rise.  Guys like Jamie Lovemark and Kyle Stanley will follow their buddy Rickie Fowler into stardom. These kids can Play!
  • Majors- I expect Dustin Johnson and Nick Watney to contend and possibly win a major. Also, I really like Hunter Mahan’s chances, especially at Augusta. These guys are past their 2010 mistakes and they want to prove it.

The game of golf is in a great place right now, don’t blink in 2011 you may miss something special.

What do you think the big stories will be?
