18 Holes with Perry Maxwell
Last Friday I had the rare opportunity to play the golf course at the Old Town Club in Winston Salem. If you ever-ever-ever have the chance to play there, do it! As playable today as it was when Charlie Babcock teed it up here in the late 1930′s, Old Town Golf Club is truly a masterpiece in classic golf course design.
Perry Maxwell designed and built the course in 1938-39. He also is credited with some golf’s most renowned courses(not to mention approach and greens for #7 and #10 at Augusta National):
Southern Hills- host of 7 major championships
Colonial CC- “Hogan’s alley”
Please check out my review as well as this one from golfclubatlas.com(way more in depth than mine)
Thanks Matt for the invite! I had a great time strolling the fairways with you and Mr. Maxwell as he showed us that golf course design and nature can dance harmoniously through the rolling hills of the Piedmont.
